Emmy Award-winning reporter Rebecca Aguilar made a significant impact during her visit to Dallas College’s Eastfield Campus on September 13. The event — organized by The Et Cetera as part of a three-week workshop series aimed to inspire students aspiring to be journalists, photographers and editors — provided attendees with valuable insights into the world of media.
A member of the National Association of Hispanic Journalist Hall of Fame, founder of Latinas in Journalism and a fierce community advocate, Aguilar is known for her groundbreaking work in broadcast journalism on local news stations in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. She shared stories of her life’s journey: from coming from humble beginnings, finding her passion for storytelling and her rise as a prominent figure in the news industry. Aguilar discussed the significance of journalistic ethics, the media’s role in molding public opinion and the issues journalists face today.
A good journalist has five key traits, she said: “Curiosity, confidence, commitment, compassion and courage.” Aguilar asked each student about their passions and interest in the paper. During her visit, Aguilar emphasized the importance of building trust with subjects and finding stories that are oftentimes overlooked. She also encourages students to stay curious and committed to the truth.
What was especially motivating during the interview was when Aguilar thanked Student Media Lab Specialist Nancy Black, who had shown compassion to Aguilar when she lost her television job, and how she was very supportive during a difficult moment. Auguilar referred to that difficult moment as having the “freedom to do something else.” She reminded students to always remember that they will face obstacles in life, but it is important to have the fortitude to get back up and fight for their ambitions.
After hearing Aguilar speak, it was obvious she has a passion for storytelling. One of the last pieces of advice she told students was, “Always be ready or in reporter mode.” She described how her family was inside a local Dave & Buster’s when a gunman opened fire inside the restaurant. She added that, because of her desire to “always be ready,” she entered reporter mode, and her husband began filming the activity as it unfolded while she narrated. “Seize the moment; you never know when your next opportunity may present itself,” she added.
Aguilar also took the time to answer students’ questions about developing their skills as journalists. She also handed out business cards, encouraging students to contact her directly. Aguilar hopes to inspire the next generation of journalists by linking them with mentors or persons in the fields in which they aspire to work.
Aguilar’s visit had an unforgettable impact on the Eastfield students at the Et Cetera, sparking their enthusiasm for journalism and motivating them to pursue their goals with tenacity and honesty.
