Everyone should have a spot on campus where they can feel safe, whether that’s a specific spot in the Hive, a table in the library, or sitting and enjoying a Subway sandwich in the C-Building.Unfortunately, talking about safety on campus can sometimes feel cold, formal or even scary. This column will hopefully act as a quiet and less robotic place to learn a little bit about Title IX and how it helps Eastfield students and faculty protect one another.
Title IX might look like a bunch of legal documents and paperwork but, to put it simply, it’s the promise that every student and faculty member has the right to exist in an environment free from harassment or discrimination. It serves as the foundation for why students can make the library or the Hive their safe spots on campus, protecting students from sexual misconduct and discrimination based on gender identity and orientation. Title IX also guarantees equal access to

athletics, admission and financial aid. Further, parenting and pregnant students are guaranteed reasonable adjustments such as elevator access, excused absences and access to lactation spaces. Federally funded institutions like Dallas College are required by law to have a Title IX coordinator who helps students and staff members navigate their options!
Eastfield students look out for each other! If you or someone you know feels like their safety is at risk, or they are being discriminated against, they don’t have to handle that alone. Title IV offices are in room F216 and have its doors open, or a student can file a report online on the Dallas College website. It’s completely confidential!
If you or someone you know has any questions or just needs to talk, they can reach out to the Title IX Coordinators listed below! Their job is to listen and help students find a way to handle their options using support, resources and a safe place to be heard.
